Global Building Solutions was contracted to install a decorative epoxy flake flooring system throughout the new Block C building at the Dominica Grammar School. The project covers approximately 15,715 square feet and includes classrooms, corridors, and other high-traffic areas.
Before GBS began the epoxy installation, the classroom floors had been coated with porch and patio paint. Because this coating was not a suitable foundation for the new epoxy flooring system, it first had to be mechanically removed.
The new flooring system was selected to provide the school with a durable, attractive, and easy-to-maintain surface capable of withstanding the demands of a busy educational environment.
The primary goal was to create a durable and visually appealing floor finish that would complement the modern design of the new school building.
The client required a flooring solution that could withstand frequent foot traffic, simplify cleaning and maintenance, and provide long-term protection for the concrete surfaces. It was also important to achieve a consistent finish across the classrooms, corridors, and adjoining areas.
One of the main challenges was the existing porch and patio paint that had been applied to the classroom floors. Epoxy flooring requires a properly prepared and mechanically profiled concrete surface to achieve reliable adhesion. Installing epoxy directly over the existing paint could have compromised the performance and lifespan of the new flooring system.
GBS therefore had to grind the classroom floors to remove the paint and expose the underlying concrete before beginning the epoxy application.
Additional challenges included cracks and areas of weak or powdery screed, particularly within the corridors. These conditions required further preparation and corrective treatment before the flooring system could be installed.
The size of the project also required careful coordination of surface preparation, workforce deployment, and installation schedules to maintain a consistent finish throughout the building.
GBS adopted a carefully managed, phased approach to the project. The classroom floors were mechanically ground to remove the porch and patio paint, eliminate surface contaminants, and create the concrete profile required for proper epoxy adhesion.
Following the grinding process, the surfaces were thoroughly inspected and prepared. Special attention was given to cracks, uneven sections, and areas containing weak or powdery material. Where necessary, GBS recommended additional treatments to stabilize and strengthen the concrete before installing the flooring system.
The epoxy installation process included:
- Mechanical grinding and removal of the existing paint
- Cleaning and inspection of the exposed concrete
- Treatment of cracks and surface defects
- Application of the epoxy base system
- Distribution of decorative flakes
- Application of a protective clear finish

The project has transformed the previously painted classroom floors into clean, modern, and professionally finished epoxy surfaces that complement the design of the new Block C building.
Removing the porch and patio paint and properly preparing the underlying concrete created a stronger foundation for the epoxy system and helped improve its adhesion, durability, and expected service life.
